Willow charcoal, and coloured conte with black acrylic paint…
Previous months have seen me painting utilising more traditional methods and using raw vibrant colours in acrylic on various papers, canvas, acrylic, watercolour over original graphite drawings Helping me along the way I’ve been referring back to my collection of life drawings as well as some of my favourite expressionist artists like Kirkner and Matisse
What do you think? On occassion I add colour to my large charcoal drawings using conte and coloured pastels, I’m interesested as to whether the large 40 minute portrait drawings (below) have been improved by the addition of colour compared with previous black and white drawings, or should I stick with the Black and White?
Short sketches allow the artist to get to know the figure prior to drawing longer studies, large drawings often serve as reference material for other artworks
I begin with the shadows, using the edge of a piece of willow charcoal to create shape, rubbing lines with my hands between sittings creates movement and allows for defining the figure
